Does your genealogy
research need help?
Do you need revived to
carry on your quest?
Do you need a twelve
step program? Well
help is here. The fol-
lowing is a step by step
program to aid in your
search.
1: Place a goal, make it
realistic. You may need
to make it simple, but
regardless, set up a
goal.
2: Make a schedule,
also make it realistic to
your lifestyle. If it is im-
possible, you won‟t
stick with it.
3: Get a check-up,
make sure your infor-
mation is healthy be-
fore building on it fur-
ther.
4: Get rid of excess
whether it is junk
(finally proven not your
family, old magazines,
etc..) or duplicates.
Give the duplicates to
another family mem-
ber.
5: Mix up your re-
search. If you find
yourself growing bored,
switch to another ave-
nue of research.
6: Measure your suc-
cess. Maybe you need
to organize your re-
search using computer
software. Try to do one
small task everyday on
your research.
7: If stagnate, pick up
your pace. Write that
query letter and actu-
ally mail it.
8: Change the location.
Try going to an archive
instead of the library.
9: Find a buddy. Call
your buddy if you have
hit a brick wall, or you
want to try a new field
of research.
10: Take a breather
from your search. Con-
sider it a recharging of
your batteries. It can
also be a time to re-
think where your path
is taking you. Should
you back track and
take a different one?
11: Put a new twist to
your routine. Maybe
you need to try a differ-
ent area of research,
such as looking into
clubs or memberships
if you haven‟t already.
12: Persist at battering
that wall down. Push
yourself just a little fur-
ther each time you
come up with a “dead
end”. Think outside the
box.

It‟s a perfect time to set
a goal for your re-
search. What answer
do you want to find be-
fore next June? Do you
know how to achieve
this goal? What would
be your fist step?
Come to the meeting
this month and you just
may find where to start.
Maybe you don‟t have
a single question to
answer, but you want
to learn a new area of
research. Have you
looked at census re-
cords? Have you or-
dered articles pertain-
ing to your area or sur-
name? What about
newspapers or military
records? Maybe what
you need for a goal this
year is to become or-
ganized. Set your goal,
research and learn
how to achieve it, and
then feel the euphoria
once you have.
Did you know that you
can access a world wide
library catalog from your
home computer? The
very one that Timber-
land Regional Library
uses is now available
from our home com-
puters. Go to
www.worldcat.org and
then start searching.
