LAWRENCE: INVENTOR continued of his most successful photographs, bringing Mt. Lawrence more than $15,000 in sales. 12 AERIAL SURVEYING A period of aerial surveying work followed, a development which many might contend originated more recently. Bird's eye views of semi-arid areas in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho taken from Lawrence's aerial cameras revealed details of grazing lands, tillable fields, and streams. The photographs ob- tained were then used for real estate promotion and organizing irrigation projects. k AFRICAN EXPLORATION While at work with his aerial survey crews in our western states, Lawrence, in 1910, was invited to accompany a Chicago newspaper publisher on a trip to British East Africa. Native porters carried 28,000 pounds of equipment and supplies through steaming jungles. Included were kite outfits, collaps- ible towers, and two balloons with gas-making gear. Dis- agreements between other members of the safari caused the expedition to be prematurely disbanded. Before the troubles arose, however, Lawrence was able to secure unusual photo- graphs ofjungle life never before seen on film. Among the trophies obtained were flashlight pictures made by the animals themselves, in a series of six at a time. This feat was accomplished by using two cameras, each having three lenses. On each plate's upper half, two lenses made small stereo- scopic pictures, while below the third Iens made one large picture. To lure a jungle beast within camera range, a dead carcass was planted. A cord from one camera's shutter was connected to the meat. An animal, devouring the meat, would unwittingly trip this first shutter. This closed an electrical circuit which fired the flash, which burned a cord, which closed the shutter. This final closingmovement operated another cord which open- ed the second camera's shutter. Later patents covered a wide field of activity including engines, airplanes, industrial heating and air conditioning. In 1936 George R. Lawrence returned to photography, opening a studio in partnership with the man who, back in 1893, had taught him to develop his first photographic plates. Advancing age and ill health forced him to retire, however, and his death occurred on December 15,1938. He was laid to rest in the cemetery of his home town, Manteno, Illinois.
