Verle P. Schreiber
Verle was born on July 23, 1916 in Denton,
MT. He passed on August 9, 2009 at his
home in Shelton, WA after a courageous
battle with cancer.
Verle grew up on a wheat farm in the
central Montana town of Benton. He
attended High School in Kawaunee, W1
where he actively participated in sports. He
consistently earned letters in Basketball,
Football, and Track, Each summer he spent
working the wheat farm. He was especially
good at running the farm equipment and
was hired by several farms to drive the
harvesters for them.
Following High School he attended Montana State College in Livingston, MT.
After two
years he came to Shelton to visit his uncles who offered him work here and
he stayed, He
married Bernice Sewers on February 15, 1936. Later he worked for Rayonier
Pulp and
Paper Company until 1943 when he was hired by Kaiser Manufacturing. The
company was
contracted by the Federal Government to build several aircraft carriers and
battleships in
Portland, OR. He worked his way up to become Supervisor of all ship pipe
fitting. After
World War II ended he returned to Shelton and Rayonier Pulp & Paper Co,
Verle and Bernice shared a drive for business success and worked very hard
at it. They
owned several small businesses including Bemice's Women’s Apparel
Dress Shop,
Spencer Support Franchise, hand woven loom products, and popcorn and food
concessions
at all Mason County events. In 1948 Verle and Bernice went back to Portland
to visit her
brother and wife and had a fun night picking niteecrawler worms for
fishing. He came
home with a tub full of worms and decided to sell them out of his garage.
You brought
your own container 24 hours a day seven days a week and helped yourself and
paid in
the “honor system" by putting money in a coffee can. As his business
grew you could ring
a bell anytime to buy fishing tackle. etc. Hence the start up of
Verle's Sporting Goods and
Marine, He continued working for Rayonier while building his business until
1957 when
Rayonier closed, His business then received his full attention. The
business has continued
growing and is still operating under family ownership today.
