Today and yesterday at 144 Carmel Ave.

Studying old photos such as the one above can be both
rewarding and amusing. Given the old photo, one is faced
with the questions "Does this building still stand today`?
If so, where is it'?"
An obvious clue in this picture is the beautiful steeple
of St. Mary's Church. Walking around the church with
the old picture, members of the I-leritage .Society
discovered this little building at 144._ Carme4-Avenue.
Apparently some changes have been made; but, the
building is unmistakenly there.
Research through the recently completed inventory of
historic Pacific Grove buildings reveals that it was built
in 1886 by F. Miller. In 1898 the house way owned by
Mr. and I✓Irs. Tilton.
Mrs. Ruth Lewis, a kind lady who recalls Pacific
Grove's early days, studied this old photo, and recognized
it immediately. She feels that the people standing at the
fence are probably the Tiltons.
"The,y were friends of my parents and instrumental in
getting them to move to Pacific Grove," she explained.
