Three decades of raising
foster children in their home
in Lake Stevens can bring a lot
of insight from Don and Syl-
via Irvine.
The couple, who has spent
the last 32 years helping guide
250 foster children and raising
three children of their own,
share their experiences in a
newly written book authored
by Sylvia entitled, “I Feel For
You: 32 Years, 32 Stories of
Fostering 250 Children.”
“I decided to write the book
two years ago,” Sylvia said. “I
have been going to Northwest
Writers Coop Group.”
The title of the book stems
from the many emotions fos-
ter children go through when
being placed in a foster home,
especially after being removed
from their families.
Many of these feelings in-
clude loneliness, frustration,
fear and sadness.
Sylvia, 64, was born in Hon-
duras but came to Lake Steven
as a child in 1964. She and
Don, 67, applied to be foster
Local foster mom writes book about experiences with children
parents and were accepted in
1986. While they don’t have
any foster children in their
home right now, they are still
licensed and could choose
to have more kids stay with
them.
The photos shared in the
book are of models and the
names have been changed
in the stories but the stories
themselves are real and some-
times heartbreaking.
Many, however, are touch-
ing and have many lessons of
trust and love.
“My favorite story that
stands out to me, is raising
these two beautiful girls that I
kept until they were 19 years
old,” Sylvia explained. “Help-
ing the most hard to place fos-
ter kids has been a challenge
for they need guidance, love,
and understanding… this is
why they act out so much. I
know I have been doing my
job when I have had many
requests from the children to
come back to us.”
They are expecting one such
child in the near future.
Viking girls lost their Re-
gional matchup with Eastlake
65-49 at Bellevue Community
College on Saturday, Febru-
ary 24 and were headed for
the State Tournament at the
Tacoma Dome the following
Wednesday in pursuit of a
possible trophy.
Lake’s fate vs. Eastlake was
sealed before the game even
started, since star player Kylee
Griffen was unable to suit
up due to an ankle injury in-
curred in practice.
Griffen was expected to be
able to play in Tacoma, how-
ever.
Summary of Lake’s Regional
and State games will appear in
the Ledger’s next issue.
