Lake Stevens native Ryan Molen-
kamp graduated from Lake Stevens
High School in 1995 and continued
his educational career as a Viking up
north at Western Washington Uni-
versity where he intended to study
the sciences.
His plans quickly changed after he
realized how much he loved the arts
and also how much he disliked math.
“I actually intended to study phys-
ics or one of the hard sciences when
I went to college - I was always in-
terested in the questions that de-
fined how the universe is described,”
Molenkamp said. “Geology was

something I considered for a bit af-
ter I realized I didn’t have the math
chops (or the desire) to look closely
at physics or chemistry but I had al-
ways been interested in landscape,
rocks, formations, dramatic moun-
tains and volcanoes.”
Moenkamp used those early days
of college reconsidering his ultimate
goals by being creative. While he al-
ways knew that he loved producing
art he wasn’t sure he would be able to
make a living at it.
“I had always grown up painting
and drawing, since I can remember,
but I had never really considered, or

line rush that a race track brings and
after graduating from Lake Stevens
High School in June she wanted to
pursue a career in NASCAR.
“Doing research I knew I wanted
to go to a technical school, Univer-
sal Technical Institute partners with
NASCAR so I applied to that one
and got accepted,” Foster explained.
Foster earns her way to NASCAR’s Technical Institute
Foster found out that the NAS-
CAR Technical Institute in Moores-
ville, North Carolina was offering
full ride scholarships to a lucky 30
kids for their 2014-2015 academic
year, but getting one of those coveted
scholarships wasn’t going to be easy.
Each of the over 200 applicants
had to create a three minute video
explaining who they are and why
they deserve a scholarship. Not an
easy task, especially for an 18-year-
old girl from small town America.
“The video had to be about me.
You had to tell them who you are,
what your plans were for your edu-
cation and why you needed the
scholarship[,” Foster said. “My video
included pictures of me working
with cars. I work at the race track
(Evergreen Speedway in Monroe) so
there were a couple of pictures of me
working there.”
Foster’s video included a slide
show full of pictures and integrated
voice overs. That wasn’t the end of it
however. All 200 videos were put on-
line and had to be voted on. Let’s just

Lake Stevens Police warmed up un-
der dark clouds and torrential down-
pours but as soon as the game start-
ed the sun began to shine through

Each year the two teams of first
responders take the field at Lake Ste-
vens High School to support families
in Lake Stevens and to enjoy a fun
and entertaining play off.
This year entry into the game was
at least one school supply which will
go to the Lake Stevens Family Center
to help families in Lake Stevens.
“I like to play for the fun of it
and for the community,” Fire Cap-
tain Ron Rasmussen said. “I guess
they asked me to coach because I’ve
coached softball for quite awhile.” It
should also be pointed out that since
his team already knows him as their
captain, making him the captain

Lorentzen has been filling the po-
lice chief’s chair at the Lake Stevens
Police Department and has been the
acting chief. Last Friday, August 1,
