Arthur Clarence Pillsbury startedhis first business while still astudent at Stanford. He had followed his older brother, ErnestSargent, to that institution as students in the first and secondclasses while the University was still under construction. ThePillsbury Family had settled in Auburn, California in 1883 and themother, Dr. Harriet Foster Pillsbury started a medical practice. Herhusband, Dr. Harlin Henry Pillsbury, focused on putting in a fruitranch, assisted by the boys. Thefirst business A. C. started himself was a shop that supplied theneeds of students and residents for two edge technologies, bicyclesand cameras. The business stood near the small hospital run by Drs.Harriet and Harlin and also supplied their living quarters. Whilestill at Stanford A. C. invented a specimen slicer to produce slidesfor a microscope. He traveled around campus on the motorcycle hebuilt in his shop, the first in California. He was rarely without acamera in his hands and sold copies of his photos in his shop. Theseincluded the solios, small contact photos pasted onto embossedcardboard, that held the images of such events as the firstfraternity Rush as well as views of the newly constructed buildingson campus. Hisfinal invention while on campus was the first circuit panoramacamera. He produced the plans and showed it to his senior adviserwho told him it could not work. A. C. built it anyway. It worked.
