Family Group Record Page 6 of 12 Husband Francis BUSHNELL Wife Jane DAYTON Notes WIFE - Jane DAYTON (Continued) parents NATHAN DAYTON and LUCY DAVIS. She was descended in a straight line from Deighton family ancestors in Deighton, England, who first appeared in New England in the 1630s as founders and settlers of East Hampton, Long Island, and surrounding villages. During her own childhood the family moved several times between Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois, where she first met twin brothers, Franklin and Francis Bushnell. Each was tall, slim, hard-working and quite handsome. JANE was round cheeked, freckled with red hair, short and "pudgy". Of the two brothers she favored Franklin and promised to marry him upon his return from the Civil War, where he was injured in the Battle of Gettysburg, losing an eye. There was a young woman named JANE McCORD who was also a friend of Franklin and Francis, each of whom lived with various relatives after their parents died when they were about twelve years old. When Franklin came home Jane McCord told him that Jane Dayton had been unfaithful to him during his absence. Franklin broke off his engagement to JANE DAYTON, and sometime later married Jane McCord. JANE DAYTON, broken hearted, refused after that time to allow anyone to call her JANE, and instead insisted on the name JENNIE. And she promptly turned her attention to FRANCIS, marrying him in August of 1865. FRANCIS also suffered injury in the Civil War while in the Battle of Shiloh, leaving him almost totally deaf. Jane had three siblings who married three of the Bushnell siblings. (See Delia Dayton Bushnell) JENNIE (Dayton) BUSHNELL continued her childhood pattern of moving frequently while in Illinois and later, Minnesota, finally arriving in California in the late 1870s with her husband and family of five children. She was a devout Christian, a strict disciplinarian, conservative in her views and controlling in the lives of her husband FRANCIS (whom she called FRANK) and her sons. Her only daughter LETITIA, appeared to have none of JENNIE's hidebound behavior, but her sons, most particularly JESSE , the youngest, feared her wrath and rarely defied her wishes. But JENNIE was known to be unhappy with her life, perhaps never getting over the rejection of her first love. Her grandchildren told of her listening to a tune over and over on the Victrola called, "When You and I Were Young, Maggie", wiping tears from her eyes with the corners of her apron and scolding the children for being underfoot. 02 Oct 2013 , OCR Text: Family Group Record Page 6 of 12 Husband Francis BUSHNELL Wife Jane DAYTON Notes WIFE - Jane DAYTON (Continued) parents NATHAN DAYTON and LUCY DAVIS.
