The forest was inhabited by the Ohlone Native Americans who found game, acorns, shelter, and water necessary for their survival. They also burned the forest regularly which kept the forest healthy and vigorous. The Spanish settlers of the 17th century, and others that followed, put a stop to the intentional burning. Today the forest is in a relatively advanced stage in its life cycle. With the center of economic activity in Monterey, the relative remoteness of this portion of the forest was a factor in the slow encroachment of civilization and development. However, time and development caught-up with this area and it soon became a tourist mecca with exclusive homes, golf courses, and a growing urban community. By 1974 there was concern over the potential loss of the few remaining stands, and in a partnership between the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, the City of Pacific Grove, and the Pebble Beach Company, this "forest grove" was protected. This 20 acre stand of pine forest was the fledgling Regional Park District's first acquisition project. http:Uwww.mprpd.org/parks/vanwinkle.html +You can download and print a detailed map of the Van Winkle Open Space location.
