Lierat0,1 1 Cp#n, Tri.lb. pkarmib., jnc. 230 SAN JOSE ST.. SUITE #10 SALINAS. CALIFORNIA 93901 TELEPHONE: February 18, 1991' Planning Commission City of Pacific Grove Today I heard the chainsaws, then I heard the crash as the final touches were added to the shameless and needless demolition of 130 Forest Avenue. As a resident and a member of the Heritage Society who must look at this gaping hole on one of the most-traveled and photographed streets of our city, I have many questions regarding the legalities and consequences of this demolition. First of all, why weren't the neighbors notified of the extent of remodeling/demolition intended? When we relocated the ham radio antenna from the roof of our home to the yard, we were required to notify, at our expense, residents for blocks around us. I cannot find a single neighbor who received a notification letter for the remodeling or the demolition. Second, why was most of the demolition done on weekends/holidays? Residents were unable to call the Planning Commission in time to save this home. Third, why was demolition completed before the hearing date of February 27? Unfortunately for the neighborhood, the damage is done. One of the most photographed historical homes in the city is gone; it can never be replaced. All we can do is write our letters and hope that they are read by those who have the power to insure that this does not happen again. I hope that the contractor and the owners will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. As far as I am concerned, they are criminals who deserve to be punished. The contractor, David Prew, resided in the home for some time; I cannot believe that he was ignorant of the regulations protecting plague homes. He deserves to have his contractor's license suspended. This matter needs to be investigated; the protection process has broken down somewhere. I would hate to think that the members of the Heritage Society must stand guard in shifts whenever a project is undertaken involving a plague house in order to insure that other irreplaceable structures are not demolished. dri /49*J Carolyn K.
