Russell Everett Thckness Russell Everett Tuckness passed away Sunday November 7, 2010 at Fir Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shelton, Wash. He was 88. He was born November 24, 1921 to less and Esther (Fowler) Tuekness in Ekalaka, Montana. During his youth he and his siblings rode a big white horse (Snowball) three miles to a one-room schoolhouse while living in Mill Iron, Montana. In 1934 the family moved to Melba, Idaho where he graduated from high school in 1940. Following graduation he moved to Tracyton, Wash. where he worked digging wells and then for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for two years before joining the Navy, where he served on the USS Preble during World War 11 throughout the South Pacific. In 1945 he was on the Preble’s final voyage to Norfolk, Virginia where the ship was to be scrapped.,.the ship was built in 1921...the year Russell was born. In 1945 Russell tnarried Marjorie Kirk in Berkley, Calif, They moved to Malone, Wash. in 1946. During 1946 and 1947 Russell and his father Jess operated a blacksmith shop in Elma, Wash. In 1947 he went to work for Simpson Timber at the McCleary plywood plant. In 1948 he began working at Camp Grisdale as a mechanic. He was responsible for discovering the shop on fire, saving Camp Grisdale from destruction. In 1953 Russell transferred to Camp Govey where he worked until his retirement in 1982. He helped build some of this new logging camp. In 1964, Russell, Margie and their sons Emmett and Donald moved to the Skokomish Valley in Shelton, Wash. Russell was a Skokomish Valley Fire Dept. 9 volunteer from 1968 to 1993 (25 years), He taught firearm safety classes for many years. He was an active member of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association. branch 20. He enjoyed restoring tractors and stationary engines and attending tractor pulls and shows with his sons. Russell was very talented at woodworking. He liked animals, especially dogs and hunting and fishing. During the late 1940’s and early 1950’s he and Margie had fun going to dances and playing cards with friends. Over the years he really enjoyed attending gatherings at the Brooks family cabin on Mason Lake for excellent food and visiting. He is survived by his sons Emmett of Shelton and Donald of Belfair, Wash; sister, Margie (Marvin) Brooks of Bremerton, Wash; brothers, Bob Tuckness of Traeyton, Wash, and Floyd Tuckness (Marlin) of Winlock, Wash.; grandsons, Donnie, Robert (Daniele), Johnathon and Daniel; great granddaughter Sierra Tuckness and step—greatgrandson, Thomas Daniel. His parents. a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Vernon Peterson and a sister-in-law Gloria Tuckness preceded him in death. A service was held at Hope Chapel in Shelton and the reception was held at the Skokomish Valley Grange, on Saturday November 13, 2010. McComh Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
