Dear Barbara,
As you know, I have had a demolition permit pending since the first of this
year. During this time I have had the property assessed by a building contractor with
experience in log homes, a structural engineer, a termite inspector and Doug Rick,
the chief building inspector for the city. All such investigations have been very
discouraging and probably best summed up by the engineers report "We believe that
the structure is in a state of great disrepair............we believe that the structure
would not be economically salvageable".
Although I feel that demolition of the log cabin is warranted, I find the thought
of tearing down this voice from the past particularly offensive.
In an effort to save this log cabin I am willing to participate in a major way
beth financially and with my continued efforts.
The following is an outline of a commitment I would consider making in order
to resurrect this log home from its current state of slow death.
• I would donate the house to the Heritage Society so they could control its future.
• I would, at my expense, move the log cabin to a less prominent location on the
lot.
• I would warehouse the log cabin for up to one year. During this year a call to the
community at large can be made, wherein any citizen could receive the log
home FREE, with the understanding that they agree to restore it and make it
available to the annual Heritage Tour. The home would also be ideal for a
commercial application (coffee shop etc.) this would allow countless locals and
guests to our community access to the log home daily. This tack is similar to the
theme that saved the Door House in Carmel. The city made certain allowances
in order to save the home.
• During this process I would assess the possibility of division of the Chestnut
parcel. Should I elect to divide the property I would provide the Heritage Society
$25,000 to be applied towards the appraised value of the lot if the party acquiring
and renovating the log house would leave it on Chestnut.
I have come to the realization that I cannot save this home on my own.
However with the help of the City, Heritage Society, the community and my
commitment, 1 still think we can save this part of our past.
Sincerely,
Larry Scholink
