Walker returned to MPC where is serves as the college's Associate Dean, Student Services. iana Matthews win i Student-Athletes Luke Matthews Luke Matthews' story is unique, but not necessarily an unusual one for a com- munity college student athlete. Like many MPC students his path did not lead directly from high school to col- lege. After graduating from Moscow High in Boise, Idaho where he was an outstanding baseball and football play- er, Luke turned down college recruiters and enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. He served four years with the Corps, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan during "Operation Enduring Freedom." It was there that Luke made the deci- sion to return to college and play base- ball. Luke's father Mark had played baseball at MPC in 1962-63 for Coach Larry Cummins and, after conversa- tions with current Head Coach Daniel Phillips, Luke made a commitment to become a Lobo. Luke's hard work and dedication to the team helped him become one of the Lobos' top offensive players in 2008. Briana Matthews Briana Matthews arrived at MPC in the fall of 2007 after a very successful basketball and track career at Alvarez and North Salinas High Schools. Bri- ana succeeded in the classroom as well, achieving the honor roll in each of her four years. Briana's impact on local high school basketball was imme- diate as she became a varsity starting player her freshman year. Her basket- ball skills won her the title of Player of the Year by both the Monterey County Herald and Salinas Californian in both question, not just repeat the answers." continued on page 8 her junior and senior seasons. Her athletic talents were not limited to the basketball court. While a member of the North Salinas High track team, Briana was named to the All Tri-County Athletic League team and qualified for the Central Coast Section finals in four events. At MPC, Briana continued her solid work in the classroom and excellence in athletics. As a member of the wom- en's basketball team she was named First Team All Conference in her fresh- men year, and Honorable Mention as a sophomore. This past season she was voted team captain by her peers and was among the team leaders in every statistical category. Briana did not limit herself to one sport while at MPC. After completing the basketball season last year, she joined the track team and was a member of the 4x100 relay team, which broke the school re- cord previously set in 1981 on its way to a sixth-place finish at the California Community College State Finals. Walker returned to MPC where is serves as the college's Associate Dean, Student Services. iana Matthews win i Student-Athletes Luke Matthews Luke Matthews' story is unique, but not necessarily an unusual one for a com- munity college student athlete. Like many MPC students his path did not lead directly from high school to col- lege. After graduating from Moscow High in Boise, Idaho where he was an outstanding baseball and football play- er, Luke turned down college recruiters and enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. He served four years with the Corps, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan during "Operation Enduring Freedom." It was there that Luke made the deci- sion to return to college and play base- ball. Luke's father Mark had played baseball at MPC in 1962-63 for Coach Larry Cummins and, after conversa- tions with current Head Coach Daniel Phillips, Luke made a commitment to become a Lobo. Luke's hard work and dedication to the team helped him become one of the Lobos' top offensive players in 2008. Briana Matthews Briana Matthews arrived at MPC in the fall of 2007 after a very successful basketball and track career at Alvarez and North Salinas High Schools. Bri- ana succeeded in the classroom as well, achieving the honor roll in each of her four years. Briana's impact on local high school basketball was imme- diate as she became a varsity starting player her freshman year. Her basket- ball skills won her the title of Player of the Year by both the Monterey County Herald and Salinas Californian in both question, not just repeat the answers." continued on page 8 her junior and senior seasons. Her athletic talents were not limited to the basketball court. While a member of the North Salinas High track team, Briana was named to the All Tri-County Athletic League team and qualified for the Central Coast Section finals in four events. At MPC, Briana continued her solid work in the classroom and excellence in athletics. As a member of the wom- en's basketball team she was named First Team All Conference in her fresh- men year, and Honorable Mention as a sophomore. This past season she was voted team captain by her peers and was among the team leaders in every statistical category. Briana did not limit herself to one sport while at MPC. After completing the basketball season last year, she joined the track team and was a member of the 4x100 relay team, which broke the school re- cord previously set in 1981 on its way to a sixth-place finish at the California Community College State Finals.
