First Formation Flight
PARTICIPATING in hil first formation flight on October
12, was RAdm. M. E. Dornin, Commander, Operational Test
and Evaluation Force. RAdm. Dornin, left, was a passenger
in a TA-4F Skyhawk piloted by Cdr. D. Loranger. The air·
craft, on loan from Attack Squadron 125, Lemoore, Califor·
nia, il a dual leat jet trainer. It is also the latelt model of
the Douglal Skyhawk series. The flight originated from
VX·5 and included an aerial tour of the Randlbur~ W..h
area and the Coso target range. Squadron aircraft 'consist-
ing of an F-4B Phantom and four A·4E Skyhawks accom·
panied the flight. RAdm. Domin had arrived from his head-
quarters in Norfolk, Virginia, to attend change of com·
mend ceremonies at Air Development Squadron-Five.

since 1959 the Associate Head
of NOTS Central Staff for Fi·
nance, was appointed head of
Central Staff on Monday, Oc·
tober 17. He has been acting
head since the death of R. W.
Bjorklund, staff head since
1959, last July.
Gordon Draper came to Chi·
na Lake in January 1945 as a
Navyman, became an Aviation
Electronic Technician's Mate
Third Class here, and after his
discharge went to work as a
civilian in the Accounting Di·
vision of the then Supply and
Fiscal Department.
"D uri n g all the time my
family and I have been here
since 1946," he says, "I have
worked in the same building
and lived in the same house."
His office, as head of Central
Staff, is on the second floor
of the Administration Building,
and his home of 20 years'
standing is at 103·B N. Rich·
mond Road.
Draper is a native of Wei·
don, North Carolina, and reo
ceived a diploma in account·
ing from the International Ac·
countants Society. He was an
accountant for the UniverSity
of North Carolina and presi·
dent of a small retail groc·
ery corporation in Weldon be·

be held at the Commissioned
Officers' Mess.
The Thompson award, hon·
oring Dr. Louis Ten Eyck
Thompson, the Station's first
Technical Director, was estab·
lished in 1956 and is presented
to present and former NOTS
employees whose contributions
to ordnance research and de·
velopment have been most
beneficial to the fulfillment of
the Station's mission. To date

Never before last Friday, Oc·
tober 21, had the U.s. Navy
been served at any station by
a civilian disbursing officer,
but on that day NOTS was giv·
en its first one. Not only that,
but she's a pleasant, attractive
"first" by the name of Mrs.
Paul (Barbara) Kasal.
Barbara Kasal has been Dep·
uty Disbursing Officer of the
Station since September 1961,
and the last two years under
Lt. Wilfred J. Bergeron, Jr.,
who will report to new duties
as the Navy Finance Officer on
Guam.
Mrs. Kasal is one of the ear·
ly workers here, and began
employment at the Station as a
clerk . typist in Supply Dept.
She arrived in June 1945 fol·
lowing her husband, who had
reported for duty with the Na·
vy Drone Utility Unit at Har·
vey Field, now Inyokern Air·
port, in the skill then called
"aviation radio techniCian, first
class." Paul Kasal is now an
electronic technician with Pro·
pulsion Development Dept.

First Formation Flight
PARTICIPATING in hil first formation flight on October
12, was RAdm. M. E. Dornin, Commander, Operational Test
and Evaluation Force. RAdm. Dornin, left, was a passenger
in a TA-4F Skyhawk piloted by Cdr. D. Loranger. The air·
craft, on loan from Attack Squadron 125, Lemoore, Califor·
nia, il a dual leat jet trainer. It is also the latelt model of
the Douglal Skyhawk series. The flight originated from
VX·5 and included an aerial tour of the Randlbur~ W..h
area and the Coso target range. Squadron aircraft 'consist-
ing of an F-4B Phantom and four A·4E Skyhawks accom·
panied the flight. RAdm. Domin had arrived from his head-
quarters in Norfolk, Virginia, to attend change of com·
mend ceremonies at Air Development Squadron-Five.

nance, was appointed head of
Central Staff on Monday, Oc·
tober 17. He has been acting
head since the death of R. W.
Bjorklund, staff head since
1959, last July.
Gordon Draper came to Chi·
na Lake in January 1945 as a
Navyman, became an Aviation
Electronic Technician's Mate
Third Class here, and after his
discharge went to work as a
civilian in the Accounting Di·
vision of the then Supply and
Fiscal Department.
"D uri n g all the time my
family and I have been here
since 1946," he says, "I have
worked in the same building
and lived in the same house."
His office, as head of Central
Staff, is on the second floor
of the Administration Building,
and his home of 20 years'
standing is at 103·B N. Rich·
mond Road.
Draper is a native of Wei·
don, North Carolina, and reo
ceived a diploma in account·
ing from the International Ac·
countants Society. He was an
accountant for the UniverSity

but on that day NOTS was giv·
en its first one. Not only that,
but she's a pleasant, attractive
"first" by the name of Mrs.
Paul (Barbara) Kasal.
Barbara Kasal has been Dep·
uty Disbursing Officer of the
Station since September 1961,
and the last two years under
Lt. Wilfred J. Bergeron, Jr.,
who will report to new duties
as the Navy Finance Officer on
Guam.
Mrs. Kasal is one of the ear·
ly workers here, and began
employment at the Station as a
clerk . typist in Supply Dept.
She arrived in June 1945 fol·
lowing her husband, who had
reported for duty with the Na·
vy Drone Utility Unit at Har·
vey Field, now Inyokern Air·
port, in the skill then called
"aviation radio techniCian, first
class." Paul Kasal is now an
electronic technician with Pro·
pulsion Development Dept.
