Pacific Grove]Heritagd
Compiled by The Heritage Society. 372+2898
This charming eottage was build in 1882 by S.S.
Short. Its address would have been 148 Forest Ave. It
was once one of the remarkable charming cottages
featurin an abundance of small details, particularly noted
about the roof and gables. Mr. Hyde bought the cottage
in 1885 and kept it until 1889, when it was sold to Adelia
Swift, who owned it for many years. Advertisements in
early Sacramento newspapers refer to "The Swift Cot-
tage" in Pacific Grove. By the turn of the century, the
front porch was closed in to create extra living space.
n N
At some unknown time, the house was moved from
its Forest Ave. location. The reason for the move is
unknown. For years most folks didn't know, or had
forgotten where it went. Many people began to report
that it had been demolished.
Recently, following a tip from Mrs. Lewis on 12th
Street, the house was "rediseovered" at 2098 David Ave.,
not far from the Forest Hill Shopping Center. The little
cottage certainly made a long trip. Does anyone know
