There were no dances given in the church but they had lots of fun games. They had parties, and socials and pot lucks and candy epulls and all sorks of things. There were lots of activities. The weather was mild enough here that we had picnics all year round We have had our thanksgiving dinner on picnic tables outdoors out where Asilomar is now. Also we had moonlight picn ies on these still lovely nights when the moon is full. You were allowed to go only there had to be chaperoned and my mother , who had 5 children, plus working, plus running a part of the Sunday school, was one of the most popular chaperon es in town. But you walked then, you took your supper and your ukelales or whatever and walked through the woods. We would go up Laurel Avenue and through the woods over a stile and down on the other side of a fence and out there where there were dunes where the Sand plant was. In those days the sand hills were as tall as the pine trees. It was a long walk and we would run up and down the beach and get plenty of driftwood and built a fire and toasted marshmallows and played games until it was time to come home. Remember in 1910 Haley's Comet , mother was asked to be the chaperone and we went out at 3 or 4 in the morn ing it was really dark there was no moon. It was said that at that time you had the best view. It was right out on Asilomar beach and the comet seemed to light up the whole sky. It was beautiful. It seems that the church performed a social function that we are inclined to let the schools do now. Yes, the schools didn't but the church did. The church had extra rooms for social occasions. They had what they called socials and as we got in high school Philoma and I belonged to a girls class there must have been about 21 of us in the class and then there was a boys class about the same size and we would give parties back and forth and have parties at the church. We played games and had contests. Was there any interchange between the churches at the time? Was St. MAry's there at the time? There were many churches. They called this the holy city because there were so many churches and each one was very active and had many young people because they looked to their echurch and Sunday church school for their good times and their social affairs so it was more than spiritual guidance it was social plann ing too for all the churches. What. were some.of the other churches here? The Congr*ational Church is where the Mayflower is now. The Christian church was. there.
