Francis Edward Walsh,
91, a longtime Mason Coun-
ty resident, died on Oct. 19,
2012, at Mason General _,
Hospital. .
He was born to Edward
and Lillian (Keenan) Walsh
in Armour, S.D.., on May 23,
1921. He was one of eight
children, and spent his early
years on the family farm
in Armour. After the farm
was lost due to consecutive
drought years, the fam-
ily moved to Washington,
where they farmed in the\
Centralia area.
Frank joined the Civilian
Conservation Corps in 1939,
and worked in the Randall
area. When World War II
broke out, he enlisted in
the U.S. Navy, where he
trained to be an electrician.
His Navy tour took him to
Philadelphia, where he met
Florence Snyder. They were
married on Dec. 21, 1946.
After his discharge from
the Navy,
he was
employed
at the
U.S. Navy
Shipyard
in Phila-
delphia.
When the
Korean
War be-
gan, he
was re-
called to
Francis
Walsh
lo/Zg/la/Z
active duty. He served on
the Navy hospital ship USS
Repose during the war.
He rose to the rank of
Electrician’s Mate First
Class before being dis-
charged from the Navy after
the war. He returned to
his job at the Philadelphia
shipyard until 1964, when
he transferred to the U.S.
Naval Base in Bremerton.
He worked there until his
retirement in 1973. He then
went to work as an elec-
trician and maintenance
worker at Olympic College
in Bremerton.
Following his retirement
from the college, he worked
briefly as maintenance su-
pervisor at ’l‘imberlakes,
where he owned a cabin
that eventually became
his retirement home. He
lived at Timberlakes until
1999, when he and Florence
moved to Shelton.
Frank was a devout
Catholic, and a member
of St. Edward’s parish in
Shelton, where he held the
rank of Fourth Degree in
the Knights of Columbus.
He was also a Master Gar-
dener with the Washington
State University Extension
for many years. He was a
longtime member of the Ma-
son County Senior Center,
where he served several
terms on the board of direc-
tors. He also served on the
board of directors of the 10—
cal AARP chapter.
He was an avid gardener
and enjoyed raising several
species of birds, his family
shared. After his retirement,
he and Florence traveled
extensively, visiting much of
Europe.
He was a diehard Seattle
Mariners fan and watched
nearly all of their games on
TV. He also enjoyed paint-
ing.
He is survived by son
Dan (Kandie) of Yakima;
daughters Nanci of Battle
Ground, Diane Whitesell
(Scott) of Shelton, Sue Ace-
vedo (John) of Vancouver,
Wash., and Michele Spenser
(John) of Woodinville; sister
Joanne Cahill of Portland,
Ore.; 13 grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; numer-
ous nieces and nephews;
and friend and caregiver
Annie Splain.
He was preceded in death
by his Wife Florence; par— ‘
ents Ed and Lilly Walsh;
brothers Morry and Leo;
and sisters Donna, Irene
and Pinky.
Visitation will be at Mc-
Comb Funeral Home from
9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and
at St. Edward’s Catholic
Church from 9—10 am. on
Saturday. Rosary will be
recited at St. Edward’s at 10
am. on Saturday. Funeral
mass will follow at 11 am,
Burial, with military hon-
ors, will be at Shelton Me—
morial Park.
