'Hikéi' killed in fa—ll *
The east slopes of the Olympic
Mountains claimed the life of yet
another climber July 18, when
48-year-old Olympia resident
Suzann Olson died in a fall from
a steep slope on the Sawtooth
Ridge on Mount Lincoln above
Mildred Lakes,
Mason County Coroner Martha
Reed said Olson apparently, d
instantly of head and neck
ries, adding that an autopsy con-
firmed the initial finding. Accord-
ing to an Olympic National Park
investigation, Olson fell some 250
yards,.Reed said.
The coroner said Olson had
been climbing with two compan-
ions along a rocky traverse on the
Rectagon, a spire on the craggy
ridge that runs along the national
park border between Mildred
Lakes and Flapjack Lakes, when
she kicked a rock or stumbled on
a root and fell forward.
One of her companions, A] Mix,
hiked the 12 miles out to the
Staircase Ranger Station, arriving
after midnight Wednesday morn-
ing to notify officials of the acci-
HEnF, "'a‘c‘c‘o‘rding to a spokesman
for the National Park Service, 01-
son‘s other companion, Mix’s
daughter, Brenda, stayed near
the scene, The climber’s body was
removed Wednesday by a crew of
US. Forest Service, Olympic Na»
tional Park and Olympic Moun-
tain Rescue personnel, using a
private helicopter because of the
remote location of the accident.
Olympic National Park
spokesman Barbara Maynes said
the route Olson was climbing was
a difficult one which is rated a
Class 4 climb. That, Maynes
said, means that it can be made
without ropes but that an un- ,
roped climber who falls faces seri-
ous injury or death because of the
steepness of the terrain.
Survivors, according to the cor- 1;
oner, included Olson‘s husband,
Richard Olson of Olympia, and
several children.
Maynes said the fatality was yet
the fourth in four weeks in the
tional Park,
