Helen (Shawhan) Mann died Sep-
tember 9 at her home in Bel-
am. She was 75,
1mg}; moved to the south shore
of Hood Canal after her marriage
in 1950 to Calvin H. Mann Jr.,
and resided there with her hus—
band and two small children until
1956, when the family moved to
Bellinghamt ‘ ‘
She attended Mis51551pp1_State
College for Women, earning ‘a
bachelor’s degree in education in
1946. ,
She was cofounder of the Hood
Canal News, and to a predecessor
of the HuazTeberry Herald, later
the Belfair Herald, She also
helped found Saint Paul‘s Episco—
pal Little Epistle‘s preschool.
Mrs. Mann was a Master Gar-
dener, and a member of the
Whatcom Literacy Council, Bel-
lingham Theater Guild, Saint
Anne’s Guild and the American
Association of University Women,
and volunteered at the Sharing
Shop,
Her hobbies included the Liter«
ary Guild Reading Group, Inter-
national Student Exchange Pro-
gram, classical music, saltwater

She was preceded in death by
her husband, Cal Mann, in 1987.
She is survived by her daugh»
ters, Helen Tanzer and her hus-
band Stephen of Bellingham, San

Mann of Seattle; sons Ranny
Mann and his wife Rhodora of
Bellingham, Cal Mann and his
wife Natalie of Palo Alto, Califor-
nia, Hunter Mann of Bellingham,
and Ben Mann and his partner
Christopher Walton of Antarctica
Also surviving are her brother,
the Reverend Ben Shawhan of
Texas; grandchildren Shaw and
Hunter Mann-Dempster of Bel-
lingham, Emily McEvoy, Heidi
McEvoy, Reid McEvoy and Jor»
dan Mann, all of Bellingham,
Ryan Mann and Charlie Mann of
Palo Alto, California.
