Frank Buck was an early prominent businessman and civic
leader in Pacific Grove. Among other things, he was an officer
in the TA Work Company, first president of the Board ofTrade
(now the Chamber of Commerce) and a city councilman. On
October 1, 1904, the Pacific Grove Review reported that:
"The foundation has been laid for F.L Buck's handsome new
residence on the comer of Forest and Pine Avenues. The plans,
as drawn by architect Robert C. Glass of this city show that the
structure will be an imposing one and an ornament to that part
of the city. It will contain nine rooms. There is to be a
basement and an attic in addition to the two stories which will
be used for living rooms. C.E. Hovey was the successful bidder
for the carpenter work."
The years were not kind to this structure and when the current
owners, David Spence and Loran List, purchased it in 1985, it
had deteriorated to a flophouse covered with dirty white
aluminum siding. After much time, research and money, they
restored the homes's exterior to it's original splendor. The
interior was also meticulously restored and now it operates as a
highly successful bed and breakfast inn. It was placed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
