Box 1007 Pacific Grove, Calif. 93950 2/25/99 Ref: The Log House, 505 Chestnut Street Dear President Martine et al, I had hoped to attend the upcoming Heritage Society meeting this Sunday to personally convey what has transpired over the last 14 months, and to recognize the people involved in the preservation ofthe historic log house located at 505 Chestnut Street. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, so I hope you will share this letter with your board, staff and volunteers. This past January marked the one-year anniversary of our efforts to save one of only two remaining log houses in Pacific Grove. Suffice it to gay, it has been a long and arduous task. Of all the people who have invested their time and effort - Judy MacClelland, Barbara'Oldfield, George Thacher, the entire water resources committee, the city council, members ofthe Heritage Society and others - one individual stands out. If it were not for Ken Henshaw's involvement and encouragement, I think I would have given up. Ken has arranged meetings, attended meetings and been involved in so many aspects of what has taken place over this year. When this one old log house is finally given a new breath of life and a future (and I do believe it will happen) we can all thank Mr. Ken Henshaw. Some of my personal efforts include: offering a fa™ie easement to the city of Pacific Grove to ensure the perpetual exterior character ofthe building, promising to donate the log house to the Heritage Society, funding the relocation ofthe house, and securing a water source - which has turned out to be the most challenging issue. We originally submitted a request to the water resources committee to approve an allocation of water from the city's reserve - as a contribution to the preservation of the log house, (I was hoping to use the existing credits to build a new home). We felt this was a reasonable request given the emphasis which has been piaced on saving this historic home. The request was not well received, so we were to be put on the water waiting list. In an effort to expedite the quest for water, I made an agreement to secure water at my expense from a private party. We have been waiting several months for the City ofPacific Grove and the Monterey Peninsula Water Management to bless that agreement. These are just some of the challenges that we have struggled with over the past 14 months. Patience has truly been our mantra?
