Hi Marilyn,
My 1926 City Directory (Yes, it is a Polk), does not list a Franklin and/or Cora Smith residing in Pacific Grove. This
corresponds with your note that their address was out of town. The directory does list a John D. Miller, a salesman, as
residing in the house. 1 assume he was renting from the Smiths, who owned the house.
I doubt that Franklin Smith was related to "Bathhouse" Smith, as I can't recall the name associated with him. I think that
"Bathhouse" only had a daughter or two. But I am not positive.
I hope the above information helps you.
Adam

Hello Adam. I work with Judy MacCIelland at Community Development. (We
received your fax re: 141 Monterey and Iii make sure she gets it.) I saw
from your transmittal that you have a 1926 City Directory (was it a Polk
directory?) I have been renting 649 Jewell for almost 15 years and it's
been a sideline project of mine to find out something about the original
owners of my home, Franklin and Cora Smith. Based on the assessment
information in the file, the house appears to have been built in the early
1920's, and the owners' address was out of town (Palo Alto area?). I have
always speculated it was a vacation home because of the small kitchen sink
and small amount of closet space (it's only a one bedroom). The house is
quite charming, though, and well built. I wondered if you might look in
your city directory and see if the Smiths are listed. I've always wondered
who he was and haven't been able to find his name in later directories from
the 40's. I ran across something recently that said the bathhouse was owned
by some Smiths earlier on in the century (though not the same first names)
so I wondered, given the proximity of the house to the bathhouse, if
Franklin may have been a son of those Smiths. What do you think?
If you are ever in our office, please stop by and say hello so I can match
your name and face :) Marilyn Schultz
P.S. -- I worked for the law firm of Hudson, Martin, Ferrante & Street from
1986-1996. It is the oldest law firm in Monterey (established somewhere
around 1908) and they have a wonderful library. They purged some of their
reference books while I was there, including quite a few old city
directories. It is my belief they donated them to the Monterey library
which now has them in the California Room, if you ever need to refer to
them.
