100 Years of Pomp and
Circumstance
With the graduation season upon us, we
find that it has been 100 years since
Granite Falls built their first official high
school in 1910. It was 25 years before
another high school was built (now the
Granite Falls Middle High School).
The first graduating class (1911) had
three students: Fred Noble, Lizzie
Keifer, and James Ashe.
Before the end of the decade, Fred was
commanding a WWI warship; Lizzie was
working for attorney George Hinman and
one of the few women to scale Mt.
Pilchuck five times; and James was a
successful car and truck dealer (in
partnership with his brother Frank Ashe).
The Granite Falls Museum would like to
congratulate the 2010 winners of the
Museum scholarships, and to wish all
graduates the best of luck in their future
endeavors!
The first “brick” Granite Falls school opened for
classes in 1910. It stood on Granite Ave across
from where Our Father’s church now stands. A
doctor’s and dentist’s offices now sit on the
property.
