Mason County Genealogical Society P.O. Box 103 Shelton, WA 98584-0103 The Mason Log Volume 11 Issue 3 October 31, 2013 November meeting • Thursday, Nov 7th • 7:00 p.m. Start time • Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 12th & Connection • Membership dues - single: $15.00 Couple: $20.00 • Find us on the web at http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wamcgs/ The inside scoop • Shelton Cemetery • Members’ Corner • Technological issues • Letter from the editor Searching for headstones On Oct. 14th, I joined Lee Hatch, Pam, and Jody at the Shelton Cemetery. Lee heads up a project to check the written records against what is on all the headstones and photograph them and resolve any inconsistencies. Pam is the MCGS coordinator. Lee got us lined out (Pam left for a dental appointment and rejoined us later) and off we went. There was around a dozen headstones that we probed to find, then remove the overburden so we could see who was buried there and check their records. The work assignments broke out with me digging, probing, and grubbing, Jody as secretary/recorder, and Lee the photographer. Lee and Jody addressed the inconsistencies between the stones and the paper trail and made the needed corrections on the forms that Lee furnished. It was interesting work from a genealogical perspective. Fast-forward two weeks. So far the volunteer crew has completed the Holy Cross (Catholic) section and is now working in the I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) section. We’ve made over a 100 corrections, uncovered over 3 dozen headstones, and cleaned too many to count. Each headstone has been photographed and will be available online sometime in the future. For those who are interested contact Pam and she’ll be happy to enlist you and give you an equipment list of needed tools and supplies. Yours truly, will be doing this month’s program. I’ll show how to make sense of property descriptions, read General Land Office Plats and their field notes. I’ll show you some of the hidden GLO information that could help you with your research. , OCR Text: Mason County Genealogical Society P.O.
