187 OCEAN VIEW AVENUE, PACIFIC GROVE The property at 187 Ocean View Avenue in Pacific Grove's University Addition was originally purchased from the Del Monte Properties Company on December 4, 1919 by Florence A. Clayton, Monterey County tax records show a $1,500 improvement to the property in 1921. Sanborn fire insurance maps dated June of 1926 indicate the Cape Cod cottage now on the property was in place at that time, and, no doubt was the structure referenced in the 1921 tax records. M UY'-a:0- Two former owners of the property, Duncan - (1930-1937) and Dr. Swigart (1937-18)both indicated that the residence was built to showcase the antiques collection of the two daughters of James A. Clayton, an important pioneer in the settlement of the Santa Clara Valley, These two daughters would have to have been Ethdl (born 1868), and Florence (born 1876) as the third Clayton daughter, Grace Elizabeth died in infancy. James A. Clayton was a nat ive of England, born in Derbyshire, October 20, 1831. He came with his parents to America in 1839, the family settling in the lead mines of bwa County, Wiscons in. where James father mined and farmed. James and two of his older brothers were important California pioneers. Charles came out to Oregon in 1847 and on to California in 1848, prior to the d iscovery of gold. He -had been a Member of Congres s, the Surveyor of the Port ·of San Franc isco and a leading citizen of that community for at least twenty-five years. James brother Joel had led at least four round trip cattle drives to California prior to 1850 when James joined him for a further passage bringing a wagon train west U the golden state. dimast:gas.,self- educated, relying on available books and the teaching of circuit riding ministers and revival meetings to flesh out his learning.
