Former Union resident David
H. Dalby died January 20 in Ida-
hol He was 78,
He was born April 26, 1922 in
Seattle to Edwin Justus and
Ethel (Morgan) Dalby. He grew
up in Seattle and on Hood Canal,
where his grandfather and father
built the landmark Dalby Water»
wheel near Union.
After graduating from Shel-
ton’s Irene S. Reed High School,
he continued his education at the
University of Washington. His
studies were interrupted by ser-
vice in the Coast Guard during
World War II. when he command—
ed a seagoing fireboat.
On his return to the UW, he
was elected president of the The-
ta Chi fraternity and captained
the varsity track team. He won
the Pacific Coast Conference title
in the discus. He went on to com-
pete in the 1948 Olympic Trials
in both the shot put and discus,
Mrl Dalby married Marilyn
Marie Roberts on December 27,
1947 in her hometown of Tekoa.
They lived in Western Washing-
ton until 1949, when they settled
in Sandpoint, Idaho.
He" owned and operated the
SignalI Oil distributorship and
service station in Sandpoint. His
General Electric dealership was
the largest in North Idaho in the
early days of television. His inter»
est in motorcycles led him to be-
come the North Idaho distributor
for the racing names of Norton
and Ducati.
