HUSBAND - Francis BUSHNELL
Francis Bushnell, one of twin boys born 23 Jan 1842 to
Chester Bushnell and Cynthia Ann (Gillett) Bushnell in Sylvester
Township, Green County, Wisconsin, was orpahned while still a
young boy after his family moved to Orland Township, Cook County,
Illinois. His father died when Francis was 9 and his mother died
by the time he was 12 years old. At age 18, in 1860, Francis was
living in Newell Township, Vermillion County, Illinois, with his
older half-brother, Chester W. Bushnell, and Chester's wife, Delia
(Dayton) and their five children.
On 22 Oct 1861 Francis enlisted as a Private in the Union
Army and served in Co. F, 4th Illinois Cavalry. Both he and his
twin brother, Frank, who enlisted in the Infantry one year later,
fought in the Civil War. Francis' hearing was damaged during the
famous Battle of Shiloh, in Hardin County, Tennessee. It was the
first largest and bloodiest military engagement fought anywhere
since Napolean at Waterloo. It ended in a victory for the union,
with General William Tecumseh Sherman in charge. The 20,000
casualties at Shiloh on April 6th and 7th, 1862, totaled more
than all the wars together fought in America up to that time.
Francis remained with his company, fighting through the south; he
was discharged in 1864 and returned home to Illinois. He became
engaged to Jane Dayton, the younger sister of Delia (Dayton)
Bushnell. They were married at Danville, Vermillion Countyy,
Illinois on 24 Aug 1865.
