Re: Carriage House (310/312 12th St.)
Dear Commissioners:
I am writing to argue against the granting of any
variances for the Carriage House project located at 310-312
12th Street as currently proposed.
The Carriage House was recently saved from demolition
when the Heritage Society and City officials (Tony Lobay and
Dale Foley) met with the owner and determined that the
structure had historical and architectural signi ficance and
should be preserved in the neighborhood. It was suggested
that the Carriage House be incorporated into the design of
the entire project. Several ideas were offered as to how it
might be done while still retaining the identity and
character of the structure.
The proposed design strips away the identity of the
Carriage House and effectively removes the architectural
character associated with the structure.
Variances are a wonderful incentive to offer owners when
extra effort is required to work with historically or
architecturally significant structures. I do not feel such
variances should be granted when rtc, effort has been made to
restore or enhance (or even respect!) the historic or
architectural character of a structure.
Sincerely,
6661-
