VOL 29 NO 2 NEWSLETTER THE CHINA LAKER Hewlett-Packard Company President’s Message by Michelle Kilikauskas Jun 2024 It’s been busy around here lately! Our 22nd annual dinner and auction was held on May 18th . This event is our major fundraiser for day-to-day operations of the museum, and thanks to your generosity, it was a great success. Thank you to everyone who showed their support by attending, sponsoring tables, donating items to be auctioned, purchasing items at the auction, and volunteering their time and talent. I was reminded recently while watching a video clip about the early days of NOTS that banding together to create a sense of community was a big part of what we now think of as the “China Lake Way.” Looking around at the crowd at the auction, I was encouraged that the same community spirit is still alive and well. So thank you to all of our community members who came out to show your support. Your continued generosity allows us to keep telling the China Lake story. Graduations are another big part of community life at this time of year. The China Lake Museum Foundation was pleased to award the Piper Renea Faust Memorial Scholarship to graduating senior Nickolaus Jaurequi at the Burroughs High School awards ceremony on May 20th . This scholarship was established by Piper’s grandparents, CLMF life members Wayne and Patsy Doucette, in her honor. Piper was the daughter of CLMF life members Brian and Rhonda Faust. Like Piper, Nickolaus has excelled in both academics and athletics. He also has the same willingness to work hard, desire to do things well, and helpfulness and kindness that were so evident in Piper’s life. Nickolaus intends to major in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence and robotics with a minor in biology, then attend medical school. Ultimately, he hopes to combine these interests to create better options for people without access to regular medical care. Congratulations to Nickolaus, and we wish him the best as he moves into the next chapter of his life. To finish the month of May, on the 23rd we again hosted the first-grade classes from Las Flores Elementary School for their end-of-year field trip. The three classes rotated among our museum, the Maturango Museum next door, and the court complex across the street. It was hectic and fun as usual. Thanks to Dr. Bob Smith, Mike Benton, Julie Stayton and Mark Backes for helping out. Hosting student field trips is my favorite activity at the museum. Your generous support helps us to share our pride in China Lake’s rich history with kids growing up in our community and to show them science is fun, and for everybody.
