Dewey E. Sigo
Lifetime Shelton resident and
Squaxin Island tribal elder Dewey
Ernest Sigo died of natural causes
on Tuesday, November 21, at Ma-
son General Hos-
pital. He was 85.
He was born
on March 27,
1921 in a logging
camp near Mat-
lock to Edward
and Florence
(Bagley) Sigo.
He was also
a member of
the Suquamish
Tribe until dual
tribal member-

He served in
the U.Si Army from 1941 to 1945.
In his early years he worked in
fishing, clam digging and oyster
picking. He then worked closely
with his mother and others to es-
tablish the Squaxln Island Consti-
tution and was tribal secretary for
many years.
Mr. Sigo was also the assis-
tant director of the Sixteen Small
Tribes of Western Washington,
now known as South Puget Inter»
tribal Planning Agency.
In 1974, along with Ca] Peters
and many others, he helped current
and future generations by becom-
ing involved in the Boldt Decision,
a court ruling which recognized
their treaty fishing rights. He went
back to fishing and became one of
the main fish buyers for all the lo-
cal tribes.
He retired in 1982 and began
a full-time ministry. He traveled
from Shelton to Canada doing
what he loved until his death He
enjoyed fishing, hunting, clam-
ming, preaching, his dog Mighty
and spending the Fourth of July on
Squairin Island with his family.
Surviving are wife Jean Sign of
Shelton; sister Myrtle Richards of
Shelton; brother Calvin Peters of
Tacoma; daughter Janette Sigo of
Shelton; sons Daniel Sigo of Ab-
erdeen, Steve Sigo of Shelton and
Dewey Sigo Jri of Puyallup.
Also surviving are former wife
Virginia Sofie, the mother of Mr
Sigo’s children; four stepdaugh—
ters; grandchildren Janita, Je-
romy, Jaclyn, Christopher, Lilly,
Tony, Shawn, Marissa, Kierra,
Steven Jr., Emily, Trelace, Mis—
ti, Andrew, Florence and Jacob;
and great-grandchildren Tenaya,
Tae’lor, Cleveland, Nicholas, Alysa
and Calvin.
A memorial service will be held
at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 1,
at the Squaxin Island Gym. Ron
Daily will officiate.
