During a telephone conversation with Mr. Wendell R. Shipman he
reported that he had attended the Del Monte Military Academy from
1926 to 1929.
He remembers Jimmy Warren, Joseph Small and Bill Buckman.
Remembers Jimmy Warren as the son of Nina & Earl Warren. His
mother and Nina Warren were friends.
Remembers Monarchs on the Eucalyptus trees during 1926 - 1929
period. He remembers a few pines and many cypress trees.
1. Historical Background - William Buckman
Mr. William Buckman who lives at 1109 Ripple gave a presentation and
shared historical information based on his own experiences as a
student at the Del Monte Military Academy during early 1920's. He
shared brochures and described the structures that existed at the
time which were the existing 2 story house at the motel, a
caretaker's cottage and stables. The school was started in 1919 and
was closed in 1929 due to the depression. At the time he attended,
the present building at the Sanctuary site existed and was called
Brokaw Hall which served as the instructors quarters. Lamb Hall,
Inman Hall and Warren Hall were other buildings chat.were eventually
integrated intothe Butterfly Grove Inn. At the time he was in
attendance as a high school student, there were about 50 students
and 8-10 instructors. He doesn't remember butterflies being present
and said there were no trees on the site and you could see the ocean
from the second story of the main house.
