"The year was 1991, and the method
everyone was using 10 evaluate IR-seeker
concepts was to build and test seeker hard-
ware," John Auborn recalls. To help make
early seeker concept decisions and reduce the
cost and development time for advanced IR
seekers, China Lake focused on software
simulations. "With our expertise in weapons
technology, we felt we could do seeker simu-
lations berter than anyone else."

Requirements Model II (IRSTORM II) to
help engineers accurately assess the perfor-
mance of IR seeker systems.
According to Stacy Egan, IRSTORM II
team leader, existing models and simulations
of seekers are either too simplistic in their
modeling capabilities or 100 detailed and
specific.
"IRSTORM II is unique in that it is
believed 10 be the first detailed imaging
infrared (UR) seeker modeling program in
the country that can do performance predic-
tions for the simulation of future weapons
systems;' explains Ike Fujiwara, formerly of
the Electro-Optics/Infrared Technology
Office where IRSTORM II was originally
facilitated. IRSTORM II lets the user look at
different concepts without going through the
expensive trial-and-error process of building
conceptual hardware. "This simulation gives
us a tool that maximizes available funding.
