The Italian influence manifested itself in three new types of Anglo-Italian houses in America, the villa, cube-shape and town house. The Zimmerman house is an example of the -General Grant Style" based on Italiante and Stick Styles (the Stick Style is discussed later). Built in 1883 by the Paicfic Improvement Company, the Zimmerman house is constructed of redwood panels with one piece studs of twenty-five feet in length. Adding to the charm and drama of this house is the angular line that is formed by the overhanging roofs. The carved corbels and flat gingerbread embellishments are basically the only ornamentation upon the upper part of the house while the decorative pillars and balustrade adorn the lower part of the house. Other details that are functional as well as deocrative are the square bay windows, dormer window, iron grated fence and weathervane resting upon the roof. e ocean.
