2*Of i THE WILLIXM HOWELL Century Club ZMercy Hospital was established on February 19, 1910 because a group of dedicated men, led by William Howell, Sr. (known at the time as "Mr. Bakersfield") were committed to making our community a better place to live. They had a vision to open the city's first private hospital and recruited four Sisters of Mercy to Bakersfield from Los Angeles to start what was first known as the St. Clair Hospital, later to be named Mercy Hospital. Prior to his death in 1960, William Howell, Sr. joined the physicians pictured on the front of this invitation to raise funds to rebuild Mercy Hospital when it was demolished as the result of severe damage sustained in the city's 1952 earthquake. Together, these men ensured Mercy's future. In honor of Mercy Hospital's 100th anniversary and the legacy of William Howell Sr., the Friends of Mercy Foundation established the William Howell Century Club. This is a men's annual philanthropic giving club with members donating $1,000. Each year members decide what Mercy project to fund with their cumulative gift. We just concluded our inaugural year and I am happy to announce that fifty-two men joined and designated their cumulative gift of $52,000 to purchase state of the art software technology that will more readily and accurately treat stroke patients who come to Mercy Hospital. The names of our charter members are listed on the enclosed roster. We are beginning our second year and I would like to invite you to join this special group and help continue the vision of the pioneer leaders of our community. Members are given the opportunity to attend three dinners during the year, where they may receive free health screenings, tour "behind the scenes" areas of the hospital, and get to know the hospital administrators. If you wish to join the William Howell Century Club, please make a check out for $1,000 payable to the Friends of Mercy Foundation and send it in the enclosed self-addressed envelope. A dinner will be held sometime in early Fall to welcome the members of the 2011/2012 club. I hope that you will be one of them.
