FRANCIS KNAPP MORGAN
Story of Morgan's Hardware, the Granite Falls Mercantile, (our Firehouse!), and houses on Kentucky Ave.
LOL, as soon as I opened the second article ... there was her husband's full name! So ... never mind!:-)
Fred
Fred,
I don't mind a bit. I, also, hope others will get kick out of it.
I just found another version of this chapter and haven't had time yet to see if it is the same as the one I sent
you. I’ll send it on to you if it's different.
Frances Knapp Morgan was a daughter of Lyman Knapp, the third governor of the Alaska territory. The Knapp
family came from Vermont to Sitka in 1889 when he was appointed to the position. She graduated from
Wellesley College in 1890 and immediately went to Sitka to join her family. In 1893 the family moved to
Seattle where Frances lived until about 1901 when she married and then moved with her husband to Granite
Falls.
Dick
Fred,
I just read over Frances Morgan's stories and I can't find an address where they lived. Here's what I did find:
They owned and operated a mercantile store that was somewhere on Main street.
Thanks, Dick!
I read the first one and thoroughly enjoyed it, in part because some of the people she mentioned are well-known
characters in our history. She mentioned that Mrs. Sneathen was a "neighbor" - the Sneathen home was the one they
took down in order to build the Pharm-A-Save store on E. Stanley St. Do you happen to know where your great-aunt
lived? She doesn't mention her husband's name in the first article you sent, but having that would make it possible for me
to check some maps.
We will very likely publish the text in parts, in our monthly newsletter, which is what we recently did with some other auto
biographical material from early Granite Falls. People have really enjoyed it!
Have a great weekend, and thanks again,
Fred
Fred,
Here’s another version that I just found in my storage. It’s longer with more Granite Falls stories, but also
some personal stuff that you'll probably not be interested in. Anyway, use it as you see fit.
Dick
I think you might be entertained by this. It's from my great aunt's unpublished autobiography.
