“BEESWAX STORY” This piece of beeswax was found in the sand dunes on the spit, by a 11 year old girl on a family outing. Patricia was just sitting and brushing the sand around and uncovered the wax in 1940. Her short life was cut off the next 4th of July when she drowned in the ocean. The beeswax is known to come on a Spanish sailing ‘ ship, the Santos Christa de Burgos coming from Manila with Captain Don Bernardo Iniguez del Bayo The ship was loaded with approximately 75,000 lbs of beeswax being used for ballast in the bottom of the ship, to be as candles in the Missions in Mexico. It started out in 1692, but hit a tremendous storm and . the mast was broken off. The ship limped back to Manila and repairs were made. The Santo Christo De Burgos again set sail on July 1, 19%, never to be heard from again. It presumably it hit Neahkahnie Mountain and broke in half. At ' least part of the ship drifted south onto the spit.
